Abstract:
The transparency of optical signals in the visible light spectrum has prompted researchers to study underwater visible light communication (UVLC). Many experimental studies have been conducted to achieve high data rates and long distances with practical deployments in addition to theoretical research. However, previous empirical studies have not validated the UVLC channel model for path loss. Therefore, experimental verification is needed for semi-collimated optical signals propagating underwater. In this dissertation, we experimentally verify the UVLC path loss for semi-collimated signals and examine the system's performance. We then investigate the performance constraints of the UVLC system in the absence of turbulence and pointing errors. Next, we present the non-line of sight (NLOS) UVLC path loss channel model analytically and experimentally. Finally, we examine the impact of solar energy on the performance of vertical UVLC links in underwater communication deployment scenarios.
