Visible Light Communication Techniques for Future Generation of Underwater Networks

Abstract:
Underwater applications such as pollution monitoring, oceanographic data collection, offshore exploration, disaster prevention, and tactical surveillance applications are gaining popularity. Underwater acoustic communication systems can support long-range links but can achieve only a few tens of kbit/s failing to support high data rates. In this thesis, underwater visible light communication (UVLC) systems is investigated as an alternative and/or complementary technology to current acoustic systems. Particularly, we investigate the performance limit of UVLC and the benefits of link adaptation. We model the Underwater Optical Turbulence (UOT) channels and investigate the effect of turbulence on the system’s performance. Furthermore, we consider different fading mitigation techniques and investigate the achievable diversity orders. We, finally, consider a practical implementation of Underwater Sensor Networks (USNs) that requires the design of multiple access systems for supporting several sensor nodes and investigate the use of orthogonal and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access
Bio:
Mohammed Elamassie was born in Tlemcen, Algeria. He received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees (Hons.) in electrical engineering from the Islamic University of Gaza, Gaza Strip, Palestine, in 2006 and 2011, respectively. He joined the Communication Theory and Technologies (CT&T) Research Group as a Research Assistant in 2015 working toward his doctorate under the supervision of Prof. Murat Uysal at Özyeğin University, Istanbul, Turkey. His current research interests include Visible Light Communications, Optical Turbulence, Underwater Acoustic Communication, Diversity techniques for fading channels, Performance analysis over fading channels and time-varying channels, Channel estimation and equalization, Multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communications. He has served as a reviewer for the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Optical Society of America (OSA) journals and conferences. He has several practical experiences as he served as a designing and supervising Electrical Engineer for four years. Mr Elamassie is a member of OSA with membership No.1390625 and IEEE with membership No. 94182541. His major achievements include Best Paper Award in IEEE International Black Sea Conference on Communications and Networking, Sochi, Russia, in 2019.
